  • Guest misreads picnic ground closing time and demands for more time.

During the summer I worked as a park ranger and one of my duties was to clear out the people at our rental picnic grounds.
  • Our park closes at 9 but we need time for our maintenance staff to come and clean the area so the rental areas close at 7.
  • We allow a 30min wiggle room plus guests can chat outside the site where it is paved so there really isn't any problems.
  • During the end of the season, I pulled up to a large group of individuals having a family reunion dinner to give them a 30 min warning.
  • I have already given their organizers son multiple warnings about the music being too loud and every time gave them a notice that the site closes at 7.
  • But this guy had the audacity to tell me that i have never spoken to him before and that he was no longer in charge and instead I had to talk to his mother.
  • When I went to talk to the mother, she looked around enthusiastically and said we just finished cooking our food do we look like I'm going to move?

  • So I pointed out their rental agreement which clearly said the site closed at 7 in bold and her signature below it.
  • Then she looked at me and said "your sign at the front said your park is open till 9.
  • I think this was deceptive and I believe we are entitled to stay till 9." I was shocked that this grown 60+ adult made that logic up so at that moment I realized that reasoning with her was out the window.
  • But I gave it another try and said I'll give them 30 min to pack up and they can have their picnic at the public space which closes at 9.
  • They said sure so I drove off to go talk to another site but 30min later when I came back they were all still there putting food on the grill and blasting loud music.
  • At that moment I gave up and called the police. I drove right up to where the organizer was sitting and drinking and said they must vacate the park within 10 min and all remaining people will be trespassed by the police.
  • The guests all left very quickly except for the organizer and her son who decided stay back and try to argue with me and the police about how I was being aggressive and rude.
  • He got a fine at the end. But do you think I was too aggressive?
  • LoftyDreams7473 Not only was she entitled, she's also very cheap. She got an inexpensive, if not free space to hold her family reunion and had the audacity to try to squeeze two more hours. Glad the police took care of it.
  • Narutofan0921 No you weren't aggressive at all. You tried to politely reason with them and gave them a heads up notice on when the park closes up multiple times. They felt entitled enough to not wanna listen and play by their own rules, so that's their fault and not yours that the police got called in the end. You did what you have to do as a park ranger to these assholes.
  • Background_Edge_9427 You did the right thing. They didn't misread anything, they just tried to bend the rules to accommodate themselves. Some people think can control everything! I would have called the police, too!
  • Important_Scene_4295 If anything too leanant. I too was a summer Park Ranger (Park Narc as the transients called us) for 3 years and eventually a Police Officer in the same city. Ask, Tell, Make. You asked then to leave, you told them to leave, then called the police to make them leave. I would have issued exclusions to all city parks (treaspass notices) and a ban from obtaining city permits in the future. They can appeal both of these in our municipal court, so didn't sweat issuing them to thos
  • No-Mortgage-7408 I was a cop and Parks were part of our jurisdiction. PA'd area thirty minutes before. PA'd a few minutes after closing while driving to back of the parks last lot advising parking citations will now be issued. People started running to their vehicles. I would start writing tickets slowly at unattended vehicles. Amazing how fast you could get 50+ cars to leave.
  • Outrageous-Ad-9635 Mate, if you hadn't called the cops they'd have stayed there grilling, drinking and cranking the music until they were good and gd ready to leave. And I doubt that would have been by 9. What the sign said was irrelevant, as far as they were concerned, that space was theirs until they decided otherwise.
  • ChunkyWombat7 Not your fault they can't read. NTA.
  • Gargravars Shoes You have a job to do and anything beyond the established rules puts the park in liability and your job at risk. No, you were not too aggressive.
